The choice of the project's theme derives from Artemide's will to bring lighting competence and quality to outdoor and collective spaces, in order to give it the same qualitative standards that can now be found in the sphere of private spaces. Within possible life contexts related to collective spaces, we came up with some project themes, which places man as the core of such project and no longer places or objects. The focus of design has therefore moved from space and typological categories to man's needs for light in various life contexts.
The single projects have been developed within the three following thematic areas:
Light as a knowledge/communication tool. We investigated the communicative and educational aspects of light as a chief entity in providing information and showing the rhythms and cycles of man's life and environment.
Light as a shared experience in the collective spaces of the city. For this theme, light was given different functional and emotional qualities, according to the life context.
Light can be an element that accompanies and mediates the transition from one place to another within the city, as well as the moment that identifies and re-qualifies relation and rest places in nature and in urban architecture.
Light as a personal prosthesis to assure freedom and mobility. Light becomes a material to create outdoor micro-environments as well. Thanks to flexible and innovative solutions, it is possible to use light in a personal, free and mobile way.

  Sharing the Light

An adjustable lighting system for public gardens: it is possible to change its intensity, location, position, direction. It brings the flexibility of private environments to public places. Thanks to its various typologies, this structure is in harmony with the natural environments/urban environments in which it is located. A way to create new relations between man, light and environment.

  On/On

On/On is a light that lives and changes both day and night. In daytime, the iridescent treatment on the surface reflects the sunlight on its upper part. When reflected, it constantly changes, according to the intensity of the sun and to the position of the person looking at it. At night, On/On is lit on the same surface, and gives a diffused light that creates the perfect atmosphere for reunion.

  Tunnel

Tunnel is an urban light that gives more importance to human life. The coloured light interacts with the environment that surrounds it, fitting the climate and natural light changes (on a cold rainy day, Tunnel sheds a warm and coloured light). Being placed on a curved post, the light is oriented towards the centre of the curve and creates different types of light: indirect, diffused, reflected light on its inner part, and a direct light creating a shadow beyond its post.

  Ma

The inspiration for this project was drawn from a Japanese concept called Ma: it identifies an intermediate space and time that are between one thing and another. The concept is materialised in a light, which becomes a space that surrounds, protects and encompasses people... to make them feel into the light. Penetrating light's immaterial space is a way to escape from the stress of the city.

  Yotolla

Yotolla is a new lighting system for public parks; its aim is to make the entire park areas more enjoyable throughout the day, in order to satisfy the human need for social/peaceful moments during free time. The system comprises lighting elements located in the focal points of the park. It is flexible, mobile and widespread on the terrain. When clustered, the lighting elements create gathering areas (bonfire). The users can also take them separately to their favourite refuge area.

  Up-Down

Up-down is an atmosphere light for gardens.
Its performances, designed to experience nature, can be modified by orienting the light source downwards if one wants a more intimate relation with nature; or upwards to create spectacular effects. The lights and shades created with the movement of the lamp play with nature's elements and simulate decorative textures.

  Wight

Wight is a light that generates its own energy thanks to a natural element: wind. Wight is a garden lamppost. It can be placed anywhere, and it produces infinite light. Its shape makes the energy transformation process visible: kinetic energy = electric energy = light. The light becomes a bridge between nature and the energy it contains. A turbine produces energy and recharges the battery so that the light can either be on or off even on windless days.
