Communicating urban transformations has become a priority. In this perspective, in the 90’s a new institution has been created: the urban centre. A container, a collective subject, an actor able to promote and take part to the operations of urban transformation. This subject is shaped within each system-city and its dynamics, moulded by the context and by local emergencies.
What kind of urban centre for the city of Venice? From the analysis of some European experiences, and from a careful observation of the Venetian territory we propose you some recommendations to guide its realisation, more than proposing a creative hypothesis.

In this new Era defined by some people as the era of cultural capitalism, culture – that is the set of shared experiences giving a meaning to human existence – is pushed towards the market of the media, where it is fragmented and re-elaborated into “money experience” according to commercial parameters. In this scenario – in which the question of the consumer is not “what would I like to have?” any longer, but “what would I like to try?” and in which no goods are produced any more but memories – even trade fairs turn themselves into theme parks, places in which goods, technologies and entertainment cohabit triggering off a new kind of fair, the event.

In the last twenty years, the area of Porta Genova has been subject to urban transformations guided by new relational models, triggered off by processes of creative, technological, productive and communicational innovation. Wide abandoned industrial areas have been transformed, new “tribes of creative” have settled, the economic activities as well as social relations have changed. Similar situations can also be found in other areas, both in Italy and worldwide, at different levels of maturation and with different impacts. An hyper textual pathway between thematic fences; relationships between the actors; proximity and creative synergy, spontaneous and flexible ordering systems.

E-government is creating, for Public Administrations, new opportunities of collaboration with the private sector, in order to develop on-line systems able to respond in a more adequate way to the needs of citizens and companies. Since globalisation makes it more difficult for national Governments to influence political and economic conditions, the well being of citizens will be more and more researched at a local level. In order to grasp this challenge, local leaderships must recognise the value of collaboration and co-operation, capturing the importance of new technologies to apply them in a useful way creating a Smart Community. The feeling of sharing the same objective leads citizens to establish new connections and relations, in order to give a contribution to the amelioration of the economic, social and cultural texture of their community.

Gioca con Noi (Play with Us) is a project that has been created for the creation of green areas in the urban territory with game-equipments accessible also for disabled children. Social marketing tools such as the Cause Related Marketing and the Social Budget are becoming essential to develop these kinds of operations, in which the creation of an effective partnership between subjects with different interests becomes the main condition for the success of the whole project. Acquiring leadership and visibility, providing ethic and social strong values, will allow the company to increase its legitimacy in order to build a vision enriched with challenges.
